Álvaro era um desses privilegiados, sobre quem a natureza e a fortuna parece terem querido despejar à porfia todo o cofre de seus favores. Filho único de uma distinta e opulenta família, na idade de vinte e cinco anos, era órfão de pai e mãe, e senhor de uma fortuna de cerca de dois mil contos.

Álvaro was one of those privileged people, on whom nature and fortune seem to have wanted to lavish the entire coffer of their favors. Era de estatura regular, esbelto, bem feito e belo, mais pela nobre e simpática expressão da fisionomia do que pelos traços físicos, que entretanto não eram irregulares. Posto que não tivesse o espírito muito cultivado, era dotado de entendimento lúcido e robusto, próprio a elevar-se à esfera das mais transcendentes concepções. Tendo concluído os preparatórios, como era filósofo, que pesava gravemente as coisas, ponderando que a fortuna de que pelo acaso do nascimento era senhor, por outro acaso lhe podia ser tirada, quis para ter uma profissão qualquer, dedicar-se ao estudo do Direito.

He was of regular height, slender, well built and handsome, more because of the noble and sympathetic expression of his face than because of his physical features, which however were not irregular. Although his spirit was not very cultivated, he was endowed with a lucid and robust understanding, capable of elevating himself to the sphere of the most transcendent conceptions. Having completed his preparatory studies, as he was a philosopher, who weighed things seriously, pondering that the fortune he had by chance of birth could be taken away by another chance, he wanted to dedicate himself to the study of law in order to have some kind of profession. .

No primeiro ano, enquanto pairava pelas altas regiões da filosofia do direito, ainda achou algum prazer nos estudos acadêmicos; mas quando teve de embrenhar-se no intrincado labirinto dessa árida e enfadonha casuística do direito positivo, seu espírito eminentemente sintético recuou enfastiado, e não teve ânimo de prosseguir na senda encetada. Alma original, cheia de grandes e generosas aspirações, aprazia-se mais na indagação das altas questões políticas e sociais, em sonhar brilhantes utopias, do que em estudar e interpretar leis e instituições, que pela maior parte, em sua opinião, só tinham por base erros e preconceitos os mais absurdos.

In the first year, as he hovered in the high regions of the philosophy of law, he still found some pleasure in academic studies; but when he had to plunge into the intricate labyrinth of this arid and tedious casuistry of positive law, his eminently synthetic spirit withdrew in boredom, and did not have the heart to continue on the path he had begun. An original soul, full of great and generous aspirations, he took more pleasure in investigating high political and social questions, in dreaming brilliant utopias, than in studying and interpreting laws and institutions, which for the most part, in his opinion, only had based on the most absurd errors and prejudices.

Com tais idéias Álvaro não podia deixar de ser abolicionista exaltado, e não o era só em palavras. Consistindo em escravos uma não pequena porção da herança de seus pais, tratou logo de emancipá-los todos. Como porém Álvaro tinha um espírito nimiamente filantrópico, conhecendo quanto é perigoso passar bruscamente do estado de absoluta submissão para o gozo da plena liberdade, organizou para os seus libertos em uma de suas fazendas uma espécie de colônia, cuja direção confiou a um probo e zeloso administrador. Desta medida podiam resultar grandes vantagens para os libertos, para a sociedade, e para o próprio Álvaro.

He hated all privileges and social distinctions, and needless to say he was liberal, republican and almost socialist. With such ideas Álvaro could not help but be an exalted abolitionist, and he wasn't just in words. Consisting in slaves a no small portion of their fathers' inheritance, he soon proceeded to emancipate them all. Todavia, como homem de imaginação viva e coração impressionável, não deixava de amar os prazeres, o luxo, a elegância, e sobretudo as mulheres, mas com certo platonismo delicado, certa pureza ideal, próprios das almas elevadas e dos corações bem formados.

Seu espírito prático e positivo, como deve ser o de um consumado jurisconsulto, prestando o maior respeito às instituições e mesmo a todos os preconceitos e caprichos da sociedade, estava em completo antagonismo com as idéias excêntricas e reformistas de seu amigo; mas esse antagonismo, longe de perturbar ou arrefecer a recíproca estima e afeição, que entre eles reinava, servia antes para alimentá-las e fortalecê-las, quebrando a monotonia que deve reinar nas relações de duas almas sempre acordes e uníssonas em tudo.

He was a man of thirty; Bachelor of Laws and a highly regarded lawyer in Recife. Deixe isso para as tímidas e fanadas violetas; à rosa compete alardear em plena luz todos os seus encantos.

Algumas pessoas a quem eu disse, — perdoe-me a indiscrição, filha do entusiasmo — que V. Exa. possui a mais linda voz, e canta com maestria, mostram o mais vivo desejo de ouvi-la.
