19.4. final conjunctions

Final conjunctions requires the conjuntivo, the basic rules apply. A final clause describes a desired action: He gave him the money in order to be let in peace. "In order to" describes a goal. Someone does something to obtain a wished result. This is not a mere causal relationship from the type "He earned a lot of money, therefore he is happy now". If someone does something in order to get a certain result, we have a subjective evaluation of the result desired and that requieres the conjuntivo. (As in English: Wish you were here.)

The sequence of tenses, see 12.conjuntivo, is to be respected. Depending on whether the anchor is in the past, the present or in the future and depending on whether the events described in the subordinate clause happened before, at the same time or after the events in the main clause the verbal tense changes. Perhaps it is useful to go back to the exercise 12.3.3 conjuntivo and sequence of tenses. This exercise deals with the sequence of tenses in relationship of verbs like to hope, to fear, to imagine, to say, verbs that describes some kind of imagination, but the problem is the same.
